Korogocho Slums

You need to add a widget, row, or prebuilt layout before you’ll see anything here. 🙂

Korogocho is a slum area located in Nairobi Kenya, it’s the third largest slum in Kenya which has an estimated population of more than 200,000 inhabitants Women and children form the largest section of the population in the Korogocho informal settlement of Nairobi (a ward within Ruaraka constituency),  It borders one of Nairobi’s main rubbish dumps, Dandora. Korogocho is an electoral ward within the Ruaraka constituency in Nairobi County, and is divided into nine “villages”: Gitathuru, Grogan A and B, Highridge, Kisumu Ndogo, Korogocho A and B, Ngomongo, and Nyayo. As Korogocho expanded, it grew onto private land, and almost half its land is now owned privately.

With poor infrastructure, few resources, overcrowding, and proximity to the dump, health in Korogocho is poor. Several organisations provide free clinics in the slum, while other organise HIV/AIDS prevention work. The area has been singled out by officials because of high illegal drug and alcohol abuse, and had an estimated 14% HIV infection rate in 2008

The Muslim population is about 30% of the population, they have very limited opportunities to contribute to decision-making process that allocate resources and opportunities for the community. This has adverse effects on their lives, as it impedes seriously the reflection of people’s desires, needs and preferred choices in decisions made. The concern for the conditions and welfare of the Muslim ‘has been ignored as they do not participate in the voting process of this constituency, majority go back to either Mandera, Garissa or Marsabit to cast their vote but end up being ignored by the county government where they reside.

It established several forms of crimes that also range in magnitude and frequency of occurrence. For instance, petty crimes such as stealing (39%) were more frequent, happening daily and the more serious ones such as rape (2%) and murder (4%) happening weekly and monthly respectively. These views of this study were in tandem with that conducted by the Security Research and Information Centre (SRIC) 2014, regarding the range in magnitude of crimes and their frequency. The reason to upsurge of crime in the area is because of high rate of school drop out of youth because back home life is very hard so the only solution to this life they find in crime and also peer pressure.

Most of the Muslim houses are of single mothers due to either husband neglecting the family because of the economic struggles or some due to depression engage in drug usage such as Khat(miraa), weed and Alcohol which are all prohibited according to Islamic laws. A recent scenario that was experienced in the area was a Muslim single mother of 5 kids was about to commit arson and kill herself plus the kids in the house because she has for almost one week not consumed anything plus rental arrears which was pushing her to the walls.

Korogocho has high rates of poverty, insecurity, poor housing, and insufficient social utilities. Poverty was as a result of unemployment, low levels of education, and orphan hood mainly due to HIV/AIDs. Insecurity was found to be high and it was ironically attributed by the respondents to vigilante groups and the police. Key among the needs of the slum dwellers in Korogocho were unemployment, and provision of social amenities.

An Islamic organisation called Mashallah Islamic youth (cbo) started in 2012 by some few literate youths from the area who had chance of attending school up to university level have tried very much sourcing for donors and fund to help with the life situation of Muslim in the area by donating food, empowerment programmes and also creating mental health awareness in the area because the situation was alarming.

During this month of Ramadhan hands of development donated food stuff to 34 families plus also a project coordinated by mashallah youth group who are preparing food to reverts who are during this month are mostly forgotten and in the area to Muslims who are fasting and are finding it very hard during iftar (when breaking fast) where to get food the residents of korogocho who benefitted from the food package thanked them plus the donors who made this great sadaka.

Most of beneficiary of the donation were mostly single mother and widows feeding more than 6 kids per household who are struggling and are unemployed due to illiteracy and most are having complication caused by the dump site nearby, majority are asthmatic.
