About Us – Hands for Development Foundation
Our History

“What if the pain a community endures could become the seed of its own liberation?”

Hands for Development Foundation was born in 2020 from a deeply personal place—the lived experiences of a mother and her daughter who had witnessed, firsthand, the devastating effects of female genital mutilation (FGM), extreme poverty, human rights violations, and environmental destruction.

They saw communities torn apart by forced evictions and extrajudicial killings. They saw rivers poisoned and livelihoods destroyed. But more than that, they saw a system that kept vulnerable people trapped in dependency.

Rather than accept this reality, they chose to challenge it. Hands for Development was founded with a bold vision: to build a lasting, community-driven resource that would empower people to become architects of their own development.

Founders with Community

Our Mission

To uplift poor and vulnerable communities by unlocking what already exists within them: potential, resilience, and ambition. We believe people are not poor because they lack ability, but because they lack opportunity.

Our Vision

Empowered communities and transformed lives. A world where communities rise when given the tools, trust, and opportunity to lead their own transformation.

Our Promise

We Build for the Long Term

Lasting Change

We don’t believe in short-term fixes. We build for the long haul.

Self-Reliance

We don’t create dependency. We build capacity and independence.

Future Focused

We don’t just support people today, we help them shape tomorrow.

Where We Work

Reaching the Places Most Often Left Behind

We operate across some of Kenya’s most underserved regions, working directly with communities to understand their unique challenges and co-create sustainable solutions:

  • Garissa County: Communities affected by insecurity and displacement.
  • Mandera County: Fragile border regions with wide development gaps.
  • Turkana County: Areas threatened by drought and hunger.
  • Wajir County: Partnering to strengthen resilience and human rights.
